Dog Days

In late July
Dido the Gargoyle sits
on the shelf and draws up its knees,
watching with a bemused stare as we eat
our dinners quietly, feeling the heat, the burned out
lawn, the sun swollen with fury like a general returning home
in the blood red passion of his blood red cloak.
