Vladimir Burich
Translated
from the Russian by Alex Cigale
The
Theory of Longing
The elbow's crook inscribed
with the head's circumference
No need
to prove
anything
Night
Lying on my back
inspecting the ceiling
with my ears full of tears
* * *
What is it I expect from the coming day?
Newspapers
* * *
Finally my face has accustomed
to shaving and it's time to die
Vladimir Burich (1932-1994) was a leading theoretician of Russian
free verse and a translator of Polish and Yugoslav poetry. He
spent his working life as an editor at the publishing house Molodaya
Gvardia (Youth Guard). His poetry began to appear in the 80s in
the first Russian free verse journals, White Square and
Time X, and his 1972 article in Questions of Literature
,"What is Free Verse Free From," was among the first to advocate
for it. He died in Macedonia while participating in an international
poetry festival.
