Poems by Maurice Oliver

Foreword

On a weekend excursion
down the lost highway
of ornaments it's already '52
by the time night falls
occurring in one mass
of illumination slightly off
the prescribed indigo chart
but still a complete manuscript
edited & ready for print.

Virtue

In a lesson in virtue
the martyr trades his wings
for a day at the beach where
he strolls pass the lighthouse
with real sand in his shoes
content until he reaches his photo
taped to the tide pool of mercy
where one look at his reflection
is all it takes to realize that
somehow he's been gulled.
