William Heath

The monks bathed once
a week and smelled
accordingly, the food
was good and if you
didn’t mind bells at
all hours calling you
to prayer it wasn’t
such a bad life and
when they all sang
Gregorian chants you
didn’t mind the stench
it was so beautiful.

Mother said it was
the stork that brought
my baby brother
but I knew better
I saw the doctor bring
him into the house
in a black bag.
