Our Sense of What We Did Right

Thomas Wooten

We hatched the egg.
We took turns sitting on it.
Believe me, it was cold and hard
and often felt like someone else's.

When predators came
we rebuffed them with coffee cake
and false promises that the next one
would be theirs.

Through the rain and wind
we sat, coughing and dreaming
of dry clothes and hot soup
and the other fork in the road.

We offered ourselves words
of encouragement in verse and rhyme.
This way we learned about self-deception
and bad art at the same time.

Now we are often asked
if we'd do it again. Our answer
is always an emphatic yes,
but not right this minute.

We feel good about our life
but not right this minute.
