Using as a primary source, his grandmother’s 1913 photo album, Philip Quinn attempts to find his way back to her (a woman he never personally knew) and the world she lived in. Along the way he offers ‘word-snapshots’ describing the power and history of photography and refers to photographers such Walker Evans, Wilson Bentley and Daguerre. Quinn has created an absorbing book about family, photography and the dark room of time in which ‘strangers’ peer back at us from the pages of old family albums.
