Poems by Mark Jackley
A Dog I Saw in the Midst
of an Ugly Divorce
He stood like a pirate
in the middle of the road,
howling, grinning. 4 a. m.
Everyone else in bed,
except I, who also wore
the darkness like a cape
and chased what sped
at me, the gathering
wildness of the day.
Snowflakes
They are angels melting
on pink tongues,
so when
we stamp our feet,
talk weather,
horses softly
neighing,
it is prayer.
First Night in a Strange New House
Just divorced,
I follow my heart,
blind men bumping in the dark.
New Love
for Kim
My toothbrush makes its first appearance
in your bathroom, back-to-back,
shoulder to shoulder with yours, each snugly
fitting in its holder. Heads bowed
a bit, theyre shy and yet
they stand so straight, so proud
to scrub the past from our
wet, expectant mouths.
