The Difference Between Knowing and Unknowing
by David Durham
When you awake you'll search
for her footprints in the garden,
lift a board, overturn a decorative stone.
You'll ignore the underside of leaves but notice
light conveyed through dew on blades of grass
that grow beyond the shade of a walnut tree.
You'll wonder, is it the song of the gate hinge,
or the throaty call of a morning bird
that causes you to catch your breath.
