The
Snake Rivers
I
sing not of the Great Snake River.
My song is of lesser Snakes. The sixty,
or seventy odd rivers named Snake
which cut across the states of Minnesota,
Ohio, Nebraska. And forty-some others.
So many Snakes to paddle up, or down.
Snakes to swim in, splash in and fish in.
Same name rivers, each, of its own kind.
I think of them a lot. Don't know why.
I grew up near a river called the Goose.
But that is not the name of my song.
The
Worm
Beneath
the drumming of my own,
I hear the heartbeat of the worm;
my heart, someday, will be its cake,
so I hope it dies of a bellyache.
